DeKalb County Schools Collection


Introduction: The DeKalb County Schools Collection is composed primarily of documents related to the DeKalb County school system from the 1940s-1980s.  There are letters, documents, calendars, brochures, maps, and statistical compilations documenting the general proceedings of the time as well as compliance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Provenance: Gift of Sarah Handley, 1985 (Accession #1985-10).  Sarah Handley was a longtime employee of the DeKalb County Schools.

Single photocopies may be made for research purposes.  Permission to publish materials from this collection must be requested from the archivist, DeKalb Historical Society.  Citation should be as follows:

Description

The DeKalb County Schools Collection is composed of materials dealing with the function, composition, and schedules of the DeKalb County School System from the 1940s-1980s.  The collection provides a wealth of statistical information covering a range of topics from busing expenses to attendance percentages by year.

Box 1 of the collection contains statistical information on the schools throughout the county.  It includes general county statistics, information on staff and teachers, population and enrollment figures, and more.

Box 2 of the collection contains general information and miscellaneous information about the DeKalb County school system.  It also has folders dealing with Jim Cherry, the county superintendent from the late 1940s-1970s.  It also has newspaper clippings and maps dealing with the school system.

Boxes 3 and 4 of the collection contain DeKalb School calendars from 1954-82, and folders with brochures, reports, pamphlets, and programs covering 1950s-1970s.
