George
M. Everhart Papers
Introduction: The
George M. Everhart Papers contains photos, scrapbooks, notebooks,
correspondence and genealogy information on the Everhart and Dowling
families. It also contains several interesting artifacts collected by
George Everhartıs relatives.

Biographical
Sketch of George M. Everhart
Dr.
George Marlow Everhart (1826-1891) and his wife, Mary (1830-1916)
moved around throughout their marriage.
He was an ordained priest of the Episcopal Church and the
president of the Huntsville (Alabama) Female College (1854-1859)
and the Nashville (Tennessee) in 1860.
During the Civil War, Dr. Everhart performed irregular
hospital work and joined the army when a big battle was imminent.
During the war, he also published and edited the ³Church
Intelligencer.² He and his wife had nine children.
One
of these children was Lay H. Everhart (1869-).
He attended the United States Naval Academy (1886-1890).
After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and
traveled extensively, including a period in China.
He was an officer on the U.S.S.
Baltimore and the U.S.S.
Concord. In 1904,
he was forced to retire from the Navy at the rank of Lt. Commander
because of budget cuts.
George
M. Everhart was the son of Lay H. Everhart.
He was married to Lucile Bell Everhart.
He was a Canadian veteran and a member of the Signaller
Club. Everhart worked
for the Department of Transportation for the state of Georgia
as a drafter, and later retired to Baptist Village, Georgia.
Description
The George
M. Everhart Papers are composed mainly of scrapbooks, notebooks,
letters, genealogy information,
photos, and artifacts.
The notebooks, scrapbooks, and artifacts were composed
and collected primarily by L. H. Everhart, a Lieutenant in the
United States Navy in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The
first box contains artifacts collected by L.H. Everhart, including
several Asian dictionaries, a piece of the Great Wall of China,
and a rock from the Rhine River in Europe.
The second box contains photos of L.H. Everhart and his
graduating class from the Naval Academy in 1890.
There are also two books of newspaper clippings from Lieutenant
Everhartıs travels and two journals of his notes.
The third box contains primarily correspondence concerning
George M. Everhart and his family.
Most of the letters date from the mid 1900s.
There are also several photos of George Everhart and his
fellow members on the Department of Transportation in the 1960s
and 1970s, and a record of his performance at the Veteranıs School.
The fourth box contains a ship log kept by L.H. Everhart
in 1910, a scrapbook from 1871-1914, and two notebooks from 1886-1888.
