from "Shermantown") A staged reading of a play by Calvin A. Ramsey, directed by Jamil el-Shair Saturday, August 27, 2005 Labor Day Weekend, 1940 Belle Ferges is preparing supper in her home in Shermantown, the Negro section of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Seawell Hayes is her new Atlanta Life Insurance representative out getting acquainted with his clients. When he knocks on Mrs. Ferges's door he finds out just how dangerous it is for him to be in Shermantown on this of all nights - the night of the annual Ku Klux Klan rally on Stone Mountain.The tale of Shermantown is a similar tale throughout the south, where Negroes forged an unspoken and illogical peace during difficult times.
